ACA Open Enrollment 2027: Dates, Documents, and Plan Checklist

Prepare for 2027 ACA Marketplace enrollment with the new federal Nov. 1–Dec. 15 window, required information, plan-comparison steps, and consumer safeguards.
For plan year 2027, the Open Enrollment Period on the federal HealthCare.gov platform is scheduled to run from November 1 through December 15, 2026, with Open Enrollment coverage beginning January 1, 2027. State-based Marketplaces may set different dates within federal parameters, so verify the deadline for your state before waiting.
This is a change from the longer federal window used for prior plan years. Do not rely on an old January deadline for 2027 federal Marketplace coverage.
Who should actively review coverage?
- People without qualifying employer, Medicare, Medicaid, or other coverage
- Current Marketplace members whose income, household, doctors, prescriptions, or budget changed
- People whose current plan will not be offered in 2027
- Self-employed individuals and families purchasing individual coverage
Automatic re-enrollment can place someone into a changed or mapped plan, but it is not a substitute for updating the application and comparing 2027 options.
Information to gather before applying
- Legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and household relationships
- Immigration document information for applicants who use it to establish eligibility
- Social Security numbers for applicants who have them
- Expected 2027 household income, including job, self-employment, and other reportable income
- Information about employer coverage offered to household members
- Current doctors, facilities, prescriptions, and preferred pharmacies
Use only a secure Marketplace or authorized enrollment channel for sensitive identifiers. Do not send Social Security numbers, immigration documents, tax returns, payment information, or medical records through a public website form, text message, or social-media chat.
How to compare ACA plans
1. Total cost, not premium alone
Compare the net premium shown after the Marketplace determines any advance premium tax credit, plus the deductible, copayments, coinsurance, and annual out-of-pocket maximum. A low premium may come with higher costs when care is used.
2. Silver plans and cost-sharing reductions
If the Marketplace determines that you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, those reductions are available only through an eligible Silver plan. Compare the Silver version shown for your eligibility result, not a generic public example.
3. Provider networks
Check each doctor, hospital, lab, and facility under the exact plan name. Verify with both the plan directory and the provider. “The insurer is accepted” does not confirm that every plan from that insurer is in network.
4. Prescriptions
Review the current formulary, drug tier, copay or coinsurance, pharmacy network, prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits. Confirm specialty-drug rules when relevant.
5. Plan type and service rules
Understand whether the plan is an HMO, PPO, EPO, or another design; whether out-of-network care is covered; and whether referrals or prior authorization apply. Emergency-care protections do not make all non-emergency out-of-network care covered.
Update income and household information honestly
Marketplace savings are based largely on expected annual household income and other eligibility information. The Marketplace—not the agency—determines eligibility and savings. Report changes promptly. Using outdated income can cause incorrect advance credits and possible reconciliation when filing a federal tax return.
Temporary enhanced premium tax credits that applied through 2025 ended under current federal law. Do not rely on an older advertisement promising the same net premium for 2027. Only the official 2027 application and available plans can show your actual options.
Enrollment is not complete until the first premium is paid
After selecting a plan, follow the insurer’s instructions for the first premium. Save confirmation records, verify the effective date, and confirm active coverage before using non-emergency services.
