1. We are an agency, not an insurer

The short version

American Mutual Insurance Agency LLC is a licensed independent insurance agency. We are not an insurance company. We do not underwrite, issue, or pay claims on any policy. Coverage is issued by licensed insurance carriers, and all claims and benefit decisions are made by those carriers or by the government program involved.

Our role is to help you compare options, explain the differences in plain language, and submit your application to the carrier or marketplace. Once coverage is in force, your contract is with the carrier — not with us — although we remain your agent of record and continue to help you with service questions.

2. Not affiliated with the government

Required notice

We are not connected with or endorsed by the United States government or the federal Medicare program.

This website is a private, commercial website operated by a licensed insurance agency. It is not HealthCare.gov, Medicare.gov, Medicaid, the Social Security Administration, or any state or federal agency. We are paid by insurance carriers, not by the government.

Official government resources are free to use and always available to you directly:

  • Medicare — Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE (1-⁦800-633-4227⁩), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TTY 1-⁦877-486-2048⁩.
  • ACA marketplace — HealthCare.gov or 1-⁦800-318-2596⁩, or your state-based marketplace.
  • Free local Medicare counseling — your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), listed at shiphelp.org.

3. Medicare plan availability

Medicare disclosure

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent [NUMBER] organizations which offer [NUMBER] products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program to get information on all of your options.

Any information we provide is limited to the Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and Part D plans we are contracted and appointed to offer in your county. Other plans may be available to you that we cannot present.

Enrolling in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan through us costs you nothing extra — plan premiums are set by the carrier and approved by CMS, and are the same whether you enroll through an agent, directly with the carrier, or through Medicare.

Medicare has strict rules about how plans may be marketed. We will never pressure you, ask for payment for our services, or enroll you without your clear consent. Medicare-related sales calls are recorded where CMS requires it.

4. How we are paid

We are compensated by the insurance carriers whose products we place, normally as a commission built into the premium the carrier files with and has approved by state regulators. Some carriers also pay administrative or marketing allowances.

  • You do not pay us a fee for our advice or enrollment help. Our services are free to you.
  • Going through us does not raise your premium. Premiums are set by the carrier and filed with the state; the price is the same whether you buy through an agent or direct.
  • Commission amounts vary by carrier, product and state. Medicare Advantage and Part D commissions are capped by CMS, which limits the incentive to steer you.
  • We recommend based on your needs, budget, doctors and prescriptions — not on what pays us most. If you ever want to know how we are compensated on a specific plan, ask and we will tell you.

5. Quotes are estimates, not contracts

Any premium, rate, benefit, subsidy or savings figure we show you — on this website, by phone, or in writing — is an estimate based on the information available at that moment. It is not a binder, an offer, or a guarantee of coverage or price.

Final premiums and benefits are determined by the carrier after underwriting and depend on factors including your age, ZIP code, tobacco use, household size, income as verified by the marketplace, plan selection, and effective date. Advance premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions are calculated by the marketplace and reconciled on your federal tax return — an estimate we give you is not a promise of what you will receive.

Controlling document

The policy, certificate, evidence of coverage, summary of benefits or plan document issued by the carrier is the only document that determines what is covered. If anything on this site or anything we say differs from it, that document controls. Read it when you receive it.

Coverage does not exist until the carrier accepts your application and issues it, and premium requirements are met. No coverage is bound by submitting a form on this site or by speaking with us.

6. Availability varies by state and county

We can transact insurance only in states where we hold an active license and only for carriers that have appointed us. We are currently licensed in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Even within a licensed state, plan availability, carrier networks, provider directories, drug formularies and premiums vary by county and change every plan year. Information about one state or county does not apply to another.

Verify our license status at any time through the National Insurance Producer Registry at nipr.com or with your state department of insurance. See our Licensing Information page.

8. Content accuracy and third parties

Guides and articles on this site are general education written to be accurate at the time of publication. Insurance regulation, plan design and government program rules change frequently, and content may become out of date.

Testimonials or client experiences shown on this site reflect the experience of those individuals only. Insurance results depend on individual circumstances and are not typical or guaranteed.
