Marketplace Income Changes and Premium Tax Credits: What to Report

Learn why household and income updates matter, what changes to report, how advance premium tax credits can change, and which records to keep.
Marketplace savings are based on the household and expected annual income reported on the application. HealthCare.gov advises enrollees to update income and household changes promptly because the premium tax credit may increase or decrease. The Marketplace—not an agent—makes the eligibility determination.
Changes commonly worth reporting
- A job start, loss, raise, reduction in hours, or self-employment change
- Changes in household members, marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, or dependency
- A move or new in-state address
- An offer of employer-sponsored coverage
- Eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, or other coverage
- Changes in tax-filing expectations or projected annual income
Use an annual estimate and update it
Marketplace applications generally ask for expected household income for the coverage year, not simply last year’s income. People with variable, seasonal, or self-employment earnings should use a reasonable current estimate, keep supporting records, and update the application as circumstances change.
Advance credits are reconciled on the tax return
When an advance premium tax credit is sent to the insurer during the year, the amount is generally reconciled on the federal tax return using the applicable IRS process. A higher final household income, different household, or other eligibility change may affect the reconciliation. A lower income could also affect the final credit. This is not tax advice; consult IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional.
Keep a clean record
- Marketplace eligibility notices before and after the update
- Application confirmation and date of the reported change
- Pay records, profit-and-loss information, benefit letters, or other support
- Form 1095-A and any corrected version
- Messages showing plan or premium changes
- Notes from the Marketplace call center or account
Do not edit the application through an untrusted link
Use the official Marketplace account, verified state Marketplace, or approved assistance channel. Do not send tax returns, Social Security numbers, or account credentials through ordinary text, social-media messages, or unsecured forms. American Mutual does not need sensitive identity documents to provide general education.
