Medicare Open Enrollment 2027: Dates and Review Checklist

Prepare for 2027 Medicare coverage with the Oct. 15–Dec. 7 annual review window, a plan comparison checklist, and safeguards against misleading marketing.
Medicare Open Enrollment runs each year from October 15 through December 7. For choices made during fall 2026, approved changes generally take effect January 1, 2027. This period is a chance to review—not a requirement to switch.
What you can generally do during this period
- Move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Move from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare.
- Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Join, change, or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
Other enrollment periods have different purposes and rules. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1–March 31, is not the same as fall Open Enrollment and is available only to people already enrolled in Medicare Advantage.
Why an annual review matters
A plan that worked this year may change its premium, deductible, copayments, pharmacy network, drug formulary, provider network, prior-authorization rules, service area, or extra benefits for the next year. Your medicines, doctors, or budget may also change.
Your 2027 review checklist
1. Read the Annual Notice of Change
Plans send this notice before fall Open Enrollment. Compare next year’s terms with your current Evidence of Coverage. Do not rely only on an advertisement or last year’s benefit summary.
2. Build an up-to-date prescription list
Record each drug’s name, dosage, frequency, and preferred pharmacies. Verify formulary tier, restrictions, quantity limits, step therapy, prior authorization, and pharmacy status using current plan information.
3. Verify providers directly
Check the plan’s current directory and call the provider’s office. Ask about the exact plan—not only the insurance company name. Provider participation can change.
4. Estimate total annual cost
Include premiums, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, drug costs, and the plan’s maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered Part A and B services. An advertised low premium is only one part of the calculation.
5. Review utilization rules
Look for referrals, prior authorization, network limits, travel coverage, and rules for durable medical equipment or specialty drugs. Extra benefits may have limits, eligibility conditions, networks, or allowances that require verification.
Protect yourself from misleading Medicare marketing
- Medicare does not call to sell you a plan.
- Do not share your Medicare number with an unsolicited caller.
- Do not assume “benefits are changing” means you must switch.
- Ask the person to identify the exact plan, insurer, and scope of appointment.
- Verify plan information on Medicare.gov or through 1-800-MEDICARE.
What to gather before a comparison
Bring your Medicare card for a secure, authorized enrollment discussion—but do not send it through an open website form or social message. Also gather your medicine list, providers, pharmacies, current plan documents, expected travel, and benefit priorities. Never send payment details or medical records merely to request general information.
Review 2027 options carefully
Visit our Medicare service page or request an appointment. An agent can explain available plans within the agent’s authorized scope; Medicare and the plan control eligibility and benefits.
