Review short-term medical coverage for duration, underwriting, pre-existing conditions, exclusions, benefit caps, renewability, and state rules.

Short-term health insurance is temporary coverage and is not automatically equivalent to ACA-compliant major medical insurance. Federal and state rules can change, and some states restrict or prohibit sales. Product duration alone does not reveal whether the benefits match a person’s medical and financial needs.

Medical underwriting and pre-existing conditions

A short-term application may ask health questions or use medical underwriting. The contract may exclude, limit, or investigate conditions that existed before the effective date. Read how it defines symptoms, diagnoses, treatment, medications, and look-back periods, and answer application questions accurately.

Benefits may be narrower

  • Prescription drugs, maternity, mental health, preventive care, rehabilitation, or other categories may be limited or excluded
  • A policy maximum or per-service cap may apply
  • Some services may use a fee schedule instead of the provider’s full charge
  • Networks can be narrow and out-of-network charges substantial
  • Prior authorization and medical-necessity rules may apply
  • Balance billing and noncovered charges may remain the insured’s responsibility

End date and renewal risk

Confirm the exact start and end dates, extension process, cancellation rights, and whether a later policy is a renewal or a new application. A new term may involve new underwriting, a new deductible, changed benefits, or no offer at all. Do not assume continuous eligibility or uninterrupted coverage.

Compare with ACA-compliant coverage

ACA-compliant individual major medical plans cover essential health benefit categories, follow pre-existing-condition protections, and use annual enrollment rules. Marketplace financial help is available only when the Marketplace determines eligibility and the person enrolls through the proper channel. A short-term plan generally does not create an ACA Special Enrollment Period when it ends.

Before paying

  • Obtain the policy certificate, exclusions, and application copy
  • Confirm the insurer and product with the state insurance department
  • Verify providers and facilities under the exact network
  • Check prescriptions, prior authorization, emergencies, and out-of-area care
  • Model a large claim using the benefit caps and exclusions
  • Understand claims, appeals, refunds, and termination procedures
